For God So Loved the World

Few verses in all of Scripture carry the weight of John 3:16 . It is, in the estimation of many, the gospel in miniature — a single sentence that contains the whole of what God has done and what he requires of us. What strikes me most is the word so. Not “God loved the world and therefore sent his Son,” but so loved — with such intensity, such particularity, such cost. The love described here is not an abstract benevolence but a love that acts, that gives, that sacrifices.
